(cross-posted from The Caffeinated Diva reads blog)The good...
I liked this book even more than I did the first, Bound. There was far more depth to the characters and the story was darker and richer for it. The spirits were even more involved in this story, and Arelia' s interactions with them really added to the book. The love triangle between Lucas and the two girls gave some good romantic conflict, too.
I liked that Arelia, despite being a voodoo queen, was still a teenage girl with all the angst and ups and downs that go with teenhood. She wasn't made to be anything other than a normal girl who just happens to have extraordinary powers.
When I read this, I was absorbed into the world of magic and mystery and Darkwood Plantation. It definitely as that Southern Gothic flair.
The bad...
Unfortunately, the editing errors continued with this book. That disappoints me more because I think Saito is a far better writer than the errors make her seem.
Some of the supporting characters didn't seem to develop as much as the main characters and it was obvious at times. With a limited cast of characters that remain throughout the books, supporting or not, they appear often enough that they should have developed a little more, I think. The Dumptys got rather stagnant, and so did Sabrina.
Diva notes
Much like the first, the cover art is ridicuously beautiful and totally supports the novel's storyline. I will most definitely be reading the next book, Possessed.

Punished Arelia LaRue Book #2 YA Paranormal Fantasy/Romance The Arelia LaRue Series eBook Kira Saito Reviews
This book Series is awesome. I love how Kira writes. The second book was even better than the first! Can you believe that? Most series follow on a course of not nearly as good as the first book, or stick to the same censorious or details. Not this one.
This book takes you on a very emotional journey with Arelia. She grows throughout this book. I love her dearly. I felt a lot for her because I know exactly how it feels to be that way.
You can't help but Love Lucus even more. At the same time, try to understand where Louis is coming from. Having never been in either position I can only try to figure it out as Arelia does.
This is a outstanding book, with cliffhangers but I will most definitely recommend reading. I can't wait for the next book.
I really like this story as well as the authors ability to tell it however I do not like Arelia. This is probably the first time I have read a book and did not like the main character. The problem with this character is she sounds like a bitchy, whiny 12year old. The other problem I have is the writer's ability to developers a character. She uses celebrity references to describe what a character looks like. It just sucks the emotion out of a book. There was like 15 celebrity references to describe what these characters looked like.
I think this author has an amazing story here and that's why I gave it 4 stars. I would like to see more depth and emotion when developing a character. Also- please get an editor cuz there are a lot of mistakes.
Thank you Kira Saito for a great adventure.
I noticed more editing errors in the second book than the first, but not enough to detract from the story, in my opinion.
The book titles are apropos. They give a sense of the overall theme of each book, so far.
We start to unravel the mystery that is Ivan. We are also introduced to some new minor characters who add to Arelia's back story. We get to meet some more loa (spirits). Other than that, there's not a whole lot to report about book 2. The story felt like it got a little stuck in the mud.
The author made the same attempt at an abrupt ending as she did in the first book. I'm not fond of such things. It didn't work out any better in the second book than it did in the first. Thankfully, I started reading the series after 3 books were already out, otherwise, these endings would seriously irk me. I suspect I will be greeted by the same halt at the end of book 3. I am not looking forward to it. /
I will have to see where the story goes in book 3 to decide if I want to continue reading the series. I'm feeling a little lackluster about it at present, but holding out hope that book 3 will change my mind.
Ahhh...I love this series. It has everything I want in a story a lovely heroine starting out in life battling tough odds, the setting a grand old house both beautiful and secretive, hints of a love tiangle, a goofy but lovable best friend for comic relief, and at least one wise older woman to advise our heroine and guide her. But Saito does more than just give us a lovely example of classic gothic literature set in the American South. She also knows a lot about voodoo, for her heroine is a voodoo queen. You learn a lot about this practice by reading the books. I have to say, Saito's breadth of knowledge on the subject and ability to relate it to the reader is impressive.
Punished is Book Two in this series. In it, you get to watch the characters introduced in the first novel become more fully developed, and Aurelia, our heroine, learns more about who she was born to be. I like the unique way that travel in time/space gets handled in this book, and it's worth noting that these kinds of travel are increasingly being portrayed in stories that are otherwise Southern gothic in genre (I'm also thinking of Amber House and its upcoming sequel, Neverwas,by Kelly Moore and Tucker and Larkin Reed, and my own series including Open Door and In Time). It fascinates me that several contemporary writers are including a particular fantasy element in the gothic genre, and I love the way Saito does it in Punished.
At the end of the novel, I was eager to read the next to find out how Aurelia gets herself out of this mess--or deeper into it. I'm so happy this series is NOT a trilogy there's more fun to be had in book four, too.
